Hong Kong to develop as an innovation-led knowledge-based economy

The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Sydney, Mr Steve Barclay said that the film production industry helped to propel Hong Kong's further development as an innovation-led knowledge-based economy.

Speaking at a reception for the Hong Kong on Screen in the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide on September 20, he said that the freedom of speech and expression in the city had nurtured the growth of vibrant creative industries with film production being the flagship.

"Movies put Hong Kong on the world map. People around the world get to know our city through our movies and movie stars long before they first visit Hong Kong. They are important cores of our creative industries."

"Being Asia's world city, Hong Kong is not only an international financial centre but also a world class hub for creative industries," he added.

The 2010 OzAsia Festival, Hong Kong on Screen featured six films produced by Ms Clara Law, one of the second wave directors emerged in Hong Kong at the end of the 80's.

Mr Barclay said that the films selected showcased the work of Ms Law who blends poetic story-telling and stunning cinematic sequences to capture the richness of life not only in Hong Kong but throughout Asia from Shanghai, Taiwan to Australia. Ms Law had won numerous awards in film festivals around the world, she has relocated to Australia in the late 90's.
