HK shows commitment to promote electric vehicles

Hong Kong has pledged its strong commitment to the greater use of electric vehicles in Copenhagen.

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, said Hong Kong would play its part as a member of the global C40 Electric Vehicle Network – a coalition of major cities dedicated to greener transport.

Mr Yau joined representatives from the 13 other member cities - Bogota, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Copenhagen, Delhi, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Sydney and Toronto - as they pledged their commitment to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles.

They also committed to acting in four major areas critical to the successful introduction of electric vehicles: the setting up of public charging stations, installation of charging points at premises owned by vehicle buyers, government incentives and greater us of electric vehicles as part of government and corporate fleets.

"Our participation in the 'C40 Electric Vehicle Network' provides a platform for Hong Kong to join with overseas partners, both in the public and private sectors to promote this new form of green transport," Mr Yau said.

"The sharing of best practices among cities, coupled with complementary efforts from vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators, will help map out the best strategy to achieve wide adoption of electric vehicles in our cities," Mr Yau said.

The C40 Chair, Mayor Miller of Toronto, said: "The 'C40 Electric Vehicle Network' demonstrates the power of C40 as a convener and catalyst for change. Fourteen cities sharing solutions can make more rapid progress than any one city working on its own."

Four major private sector car companies, BYD, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Renault, have committed to work with the "C40 Electric Network" toward the shared goal of fostering the market for electric vehicles.

Hong Kong is also a member of the C40 Electric Vehicle Steering Committee, which was launched at the C40 Climate Summit in Seoul last May. The Steering Committee, comprising London, Los Angeles, Seoul, Toronto and Hong Kong, will lead the initiative.
