  Construction of cross-boundary bridge launches

A special ceremony has taken place to mark the construction of a new road bridge that will link the major centres of the Pearl River Delta region – Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao.

Chinese Vice-Premier Li Keqiang officiated at the event on December 15 in Zhuhai. It was also attended by the Vice-Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr Zhang Xiaoqiang; the Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Guangdong Provincial Committee, Mr Wang Yang; the Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Huang Huahua; the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Donald Tsang; and the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr Edmund Ho Hau-wah.

Mr Donald Tsang said all three governments had agreed on management concepts and works standards and would continue to collaborate to ensure the bridge is completed as scheduled.

Hong Kong’s Secretary for Transport & Housing, Ms Eva Cheng, said an international design competition for the new facility would underline the importance of the project.

Speaking at the December 10 launch ceremony for the competition and ground investigation works, Ms Cheng said the facilities would connect with the Hong Kong Link Road, the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and the Tuen Mun Western Bypass to form a strategic road network.

The investigation works will provide essential geotechnical data for the detailed design of the facilities.

She invited architects, planners, engineers and the general public to enter a design competition to contribute innovative ideas and concepts, including the use of advanced environmental technologies, to the facility's design and construction, particularly the passenger clearance building.

"'A new journey begins here' is the slogan of the competition," Ms Cheng said.

"The [bridge] will serve not only as a regional strategic route but also help enhance the economic development and competitiveness of the Pearl River Delta region."

The contest is divided into professional and open groups. Judges will assess entries based on innovation and creativity; aesthetics and identity; environmental friendliness; functionality, effectiveness and buildability; and, harmony with the neighbourhood.

Registration closes February 8. Please visit http://www.hkbcf-design.hk/ for more information. The winning list will be announced in May and winning design ideas will serve as the reference for future detailed designs.
