Five Smart Home Trends from the Hong Kong Electronics Fair Spring Edition

The Connected Home was a new zone on display at the 2015 Hong Kong Electronics Fair, providing a glimpse into the future with the application of Internet of Things (IoT) in the home environment. Here are five trends we have observed from the Show:

  1. Home automation
Products that are focused on the consumer benefits of IoT and make their lives easier. For example, a smart air conditioning system allows manufacturers to capture consumer behaviour and habits. The remote can also be personalised and customised for different markets.

If this then that (ITTT) will enable your home to automatically adjust depending on what you are doing. For example, when you turn on the DVD player to watch a movie, the blinds will automatically come down and the lights will dim themselves to put you in the movie mood.

Moreover, smart city, e-health, in store / shopping center navigation system are all part of IoT evolution with an ultimate aim to connect people.

  2. Connectivity – Zigbee, Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi
Three main streams to power the IoT. Zigbee is a radio frequency that uses less battery than Wi-Fi, making it suitable for low data rate applications that require long battery life, for example door locks, scales and sensors. Wi-Fi is better for audio and video, designed to facilitate high-speed data communication. Bluetooth sits in-between the two. The trends in connected home will be going towards Wi-Fi application to speed up the in-home connection.
