400 to represent HK at East Asian Games

More than 3,000 sportsmen from nine countries and territories will compete in the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games from December 5 to 13, according to the latest event figures.

Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing told Hong Kong’s legislators on October 5 this would include 500 athletes from Mainland China, 400 from Japan and 300 from Korea.

Mr Tsang said preparations were progressing well for the games which will see events taking place at 16 government venues, four non-government premises and some sections of public road.

Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground opened in May, and construction of the new Jockey Club International BMX Park will be completed this month.

From early November, thematic design decorations at the venues will be erected. The medal design will be announced early next month and test events will be held at various venues prior to the games.

The opening and closing ceremonies, and the semi-finals and finals of 10 competition events - aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, cue sports, soccer, rugby sevens, table tennis, tennis and volleyball - will be broadcast live.

Tickets for the games are available at 23 HK Ticketing outlets or through its website - http://www.hkticketing.com/
