"Ip Man" screening marks completion of HK Cultural Festival in Perth

Hong Kong movies have had a major role in promoting the city to the world, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney (HKETO), Ms Lorna Wong, said, reiterating that Hong Kong films were one of the city's best cultural ambassadors.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on October 12 of the first ever Hong Kong Cultural Festival in Perth - marked by the screening of box office martial arts smash "Ip Man" - Ms Wong said Hong Kong was more than just Asia's leading business hub.

"Our freedoms of speech and expression, enshrined under our mini-constitution, the Basic Law, have, among other things, nurtured the growth of vibrant creative industries in Hong Kong, and film production is without doubt the flagship," Ms Wong said.

Noting that the eponymous film "Ip Man" was based on the life of Bruce Lee's martial arts teacher, Ms Wong said the film was an excellent example of the success of Hong Kong-Mainland co-productions. The film premiered in December 2008 and has reaped total box office receipts of $25.5 million (A$3.7 million) in Hong Kong and RMB94.4 million (A$15.5 million) in Mainland China. It was voted the Best Film at the 2009 Hong Kong Film Awards.

The 2009 Hong Kong Cultural Festival was launched for the first time in Perth. The entire festival spans eight months, during which people in Perth have the opportunity to appreciate Hong Kong's unique cosmopolitan culture where East meets West with an events programme that included movies, fashion, cuisine and photography.
