Two working holiday schemes increase quotas

Quotas have been changed to allow more young Australians to spend working holidays in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Immigration Department said an overwhelming demand for the scheme was behind a decision to revise quotas from 1 July 2010.

The previous annual limit of 1,000 Hong Kong youths allowed to travel to Australia under the Hong Kong/Australia Working Holiday Scheme has been abolished (i.e. no more quota restrictions). The quota for young Australians visiting Hong Kong has been increased from 1,000 to 5,000.

The annual quota under the Hong Kong/Germany Working Holiday Scheme will also be increased from 100 to 150.

Since the establishment of bilateral working holiday schemes with New Zealand and Australia in 2001, Hong Kong has set up similar arrangements with Ireland in 2005, Germany in 2009, and Japan and Canada in 2010.

The annual quota for the Hong Kong/New Zealand Working Holiday Scheme is 400.

Successful applicants are allowed to visit participating jurisdictions for up to 12 months and take up short-term employment during their trip.

So far, more than 12, 000 Hong Kong young people have participated in the schemes, while 1,500 young people from partner countries have visited Hong Kong.
