Hong Kong to host C40 workshop

Member cities of the C40 Climate Leadership Group from around the world have been invited to attend a workshop in Hong Kong in November.

The C40 comprises 40 of the world’s major cities including London, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chicago and Cairo working together to tackle climate change.

Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau said all member cities had been invited to the event being organised by the Environmental Campaign Committee and Civic Exchange, with the government's support.

Reiterating Hong Kong will follow the national target to cut carbon intensity by 40%- 45% by 2020, he said additional modelling work and analysis would be carried out to help develop an action plan, which will be made public upon completion.

He said the Hong Kong Government would not legislate to stipulate greenhouse gas emission levels for the city's two power companies.

"Changing the fuel mix for power generation involves important and complicated issues such as energy policy and security, stability in power supply and electricity tariff. It requires wider and more in-depth studies and assessments," he said.
