  Asia’s first outdoor digital playground

Hong Kong has notched up another technological first for Asia with the opening of the region's first outdoor digital playground.

By combining the digital technologies with traditional play elements, Cyberport DigiPlayground provides an innovative environment to encourage play, learning and creativity. It also helps to enhance the motor, cognitive and social skills of players, bringing a revolutionary game playing concept to the Hong Kong public.

Originating in Finland, digital playgrounds are popular in more than 16 countries worldwide.

Located at a waterfront park, Cyberport DigiPlayground has three components – SmartUs Basic, Spin Wheel and Football Cages – and is open daily free of charge to the community.

Officiating at the opening ceremony on July 30 were the Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Mr Duncan Pescod, the Consul-General of Finland, Mr Timo Rajakangas, and the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, Mr Nicholas Yang.

"The Cyberport DigiPlayground brings us the concept of playful learning - a traditional playground enriched by technological tools like digital games," Mr Pescod said.

"Its outdoor setting eliminates boundaries between virtual, physical, and social spaces. Such a hybrid of game, learning and physical activity provides an alternative to the ordinary indoor electronic games.

"I believe this excellent outdoor digital playground will help the local community appreciate how technology can enhance the quality of life, and foster a creative atmosphere within the community."

Mr Yang said Cyberport DigiPlayground demonstrated how digital technology could enhance a person’s mental and physical health, and thus quality of life.

"This is in line with Cyberport's mission of facilitating a creative digital lifestyle for the general public," he said.
