HKABA-SA 2009 HK Fashion Week Delegation, 5-12 July

A Group of talented young South Australian Designers, all nearing the end of their fashion design program at Marleston TAFE, recently got a first-hand look at the international fashion marketplace. Ian Mathison, Trade Fair Co-ordinator for the Hong Kong – Australia Business Association – South Australia Chapter led the group on a delegation to the 2009 Hong Kong Fashion Week Spring/Summer trade show.

The designers spent more than a week in Hong Kong. They met dignitaries, including Australian Consul – General, Mr Les Luck and Hong Kong Trade Development Council Australia, Marketing Manager, Miss Toni Wade.

They visited the Fashion Week Trade Fair, where they spoke to Hong Kong young designers about their own development in the fashion industry, and were introduced to international fashion industry buyers and exhibitors.

They attended fashion parades and met the parade models, took lots of photos, enjoyed networking opportunities, and searched the many fabric and clothing stores of Hong Kong from street markets right up to high end boutiques. In all they found inspiration and opportunities to source materials for their final year range presentation in November this year.

The tafeSA Marleston2009 HKABA-SA HK Fashion Week Delegation participants have returned to Adelaide with a broader outlook on the fashion industry and on their own careers, and with experiences that will inform and inspire them as they embark on their own careers in the Australian fashion industry.

A selection of styles and designs developed by the talent from the Marleston Campus was presented at the HKABA-SA 2009 Business Awards in an Inaugural Fashion Show with the help of Sean Parsonage, Education Manager, tafeSA Fashion Industry Training Services and Lecturer, Helen Jansson, and co-ordinated by Sarah Newman, Council for International Trade and Commerce SA. The garments presented were a culmination of years of the young designer’s dedication, passion and hard work.

The young designers have studied under expert fashion industry tuition at Marleston Campus and have been offered a unique perspective of the global fashion industry. The garments represented not only the creative flair, but also the industry know-how that will support them individually as they enter the Australian Fashion Industry, and make South Australia a leader in an increasingly competitive global market.
