  GovHK site revamped

After 10 months of planning, the revamped customer-oriented GovHK website www.gov.hk has been launched, sporting a new layout and better functionality to enhance its usability and efficiency.

Deputy Government Chief Information Officer Bassanio So said (March 24) the new design referenced from the sites of major Hong Kong organisations and overseas government websites.

"To know more about users' needs, we have also conducted two surveys since May last year to collect views from users on our new design. The comments received helped improve and ascertain our revamp direction," he said.

Mr So said research shows many users came to the GovHK portal with a specific purpose, and as such the revamped site will provide information and services in a goal-oriented approach to boost its usability.

A new section "I Want To" has been blended into the main and cluster pages so users can reach popular information and services easily.

The revamped portal has also assembled and provided a list of commonly used government forms and e-options. Users can locate the forms either by topic, such as "employment" and "taxes", or by life events like "moving home" and "buying a property". For some frequently used forms users can fill out and submit them to the corresponding government department online.

Mr So said one of the key objectives of this project is to provide a lively and close-to-market user experience on GovHK and hence there is a big step forward in the site's look and feel.

A total of six colour options are available for users to choose, while warmer and earth-toned colours are used to create a welcoming feel for the portal.

The portal also caters for visually-impaired users as the simplicity of this version allows them to read GovHK contents using a screen reader. Accessibility tests were conducted with local blind groups to address their special needs.

Mr So said the new site features a sharing function with which users can share information on social networking sites.

"Facebook, Twitter, Delicious and Xanga will be included in this new function. We believe it will attract new users to the portal, particularly youngsters," he said.

Considering the increasing popularity of social media, he said it is a good platform to deliver government information, and for youngsters to voice their opinions.

Mr So said an online survey will soon be conducted to gather user feedback on the new site.

A "My GovHK" page will be introduced by year's-end to boost customer service. Each user will be allowed to register for a personal account and use it to browse or use government information and services.
