Hong Kong interns arrive at HKETO

HK Interns June 2013 - L-R - Ricky TSUI, Joanna LEUNG, Joanna 'Kwan' LEUNGThe Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Sydney welcomed its 2013 midyear interns earlier this month.

This year’s interns, Joanna Leung, Ricky Tsui and Kwan Leung all arrived in Australia from Hong Kong for the first time and each bring with them a unique skill set and an eagerness to embark on the journey ahead.

The interns came from wide range of discipines and backgrounds. Joanna studies Law at the City University Hong Kong, Ricky studies Engineering Physics at Polytechnic University and Kwan studies Visual Arts at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

When asked about their first impressions of Sydney, all the interns gushed about the city and its scenery.

“I think Sydney is lovely, it’s so diverse and very scenic,” said Joanna.

“The city is fantastic, the people here are very friendly and I really like the wide variety of food around the Hong Kong House area,” said Kwan.

Ricky said being overseas meant he could push himself outside his comfort zone to learn to be more independent and that he hoped to make new friends during the internship.

All the students said they were keen to get as much hands on experience from the internship to help them in their career.

Joanna said she believed the tasks given to her at HKETO would help her career aspirations as a solicitor.

“The research I’m conducting right now on behalf of the Project and Research department at HKETO is mostly legal research and I can see myself applying these skills in a future workplace. Another bonus is that because I’m researching about Australia and New Zealand, I’m broadening my horizons and developing a more in-depth understanding of the jurisdictions here,” said Joanna.

Kwan said the internship has given her a real picture of an office working environment.

“I think that it’s a challenge when you shift from an environment where you study to one where you work. You have to learn how to communicate effectively with various stakeholders and be able to work with different people,” she said.

All three students were selected for the competitive HKETO internship because of their high-achieving grades and all-round achievements. For example, Ricky who has a minor in internet and multimedia technology is also the external affairs secretary of Polytechnic University’s orchestra.

The interns are keen to explore Sydney in their spare time outside their normal working hours.

“I love meeting new people and trying new things, so I want to take this opportunity to explore Sydney and other cities. I’d love to go to Tasmania,” said Joanna. Ricky added that he’ll be going to Queensland when the internship ends to see more of Australia.

“I’ve heard that Brisbane and the Gold Coast are really beautiful, so I have plans to travel there with my friend who is currently doing an internship in Lismore. I told myself that I must go snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef!”

HKETO will be recruiting Australian and New Zealand students as interns during January - February 2014. Apart from providing us with useful sets of extra hands and brains, it gives students down under some exposure to Hong Kong.
