Steve Barclay, Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Sydney has recently signed up to become an Asia Literacy Ambassador to help Australian secondary school students better understand and engage with Asia and Hong Kong.
Created by the Asia Education Foundation (AEF), Asia Literacy Ambassadors are people who have been influenced in their life and work by the Asian nations and culture.
Steve first joined the Hong Kong Government when he was appointed as an Inspector in the Hong Kong Police force in 1979. After transferring to the civil service in 1982, he’s served in a wide variety of senior posts. As the Director of HKETO Sydney, he represents the Government of Hong Kong in Australia and New Zealand.
Steve can talk to school audiences about topics such as:
The history of Hong Kong both as a former British colony and then a Special Administrative Region following the reunification with China |
The unique mini-constitution governing Hong Kong's independence, called the Basic Law |
Hong Kong as an example of rapid urbanisation, and the measures used to effectively deal with a high density population (e.g., efficient transport, high rise housing, pollution management, education reforms) |
Hong Kong as an international business centre in Asia and 'gateway' to China |
Opportunities for students to study in Hong Kong, or consider working in Hong Kong, or even going on a working holiday after school ends |
