Just a few days ago, on 1 July 2012, Hong Kong celebrated its 15th anniversary as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
Here in Sydney we marked the occasion with a reception, a fantastic laser light display, a Hong Kong film festival and an art exhibition. All around Australia and New Zealand, a variety of other events and activities are being hosted by our staunch supporters in the Hong Kong business associations. I thank them all for their efforts and support.
The 1 July 2012 also saw the new Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, take office together with his new team of ministers and the Executive Council. Mr Leung has pledged that he will carry out his election platform of "seeking change while preserving stability". Some of the major issues that Mr Leung faces include the provision of affordable housing, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, and the ageing/demographic problems facing society. That may sound familiar to Australian and New Zealand audiences!
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office will try to keep you informed of major changes being debated/implemented in Hong Kong.
