  All go for third runway!

March 2012 saw the Hong Kong Executive Council endorse the construction of a third runway at Hong Kong International Airport.

Secretary for Transport & Housing, Eva Cheng, announced that the Airport Authority (AAHK) could proceed with an environmental impact assessment, plan design details and financial arrangements.

Dr Marvin Cheung Kin-Tung, Chairman of AAHK noted that the "airport's future development into a three-runway system is crucial to maintain Hong Kong's status as a leading international & regional aviation centre."

Ms Cheng reiterated the need for long-term planning for the airport, as air traffic last year already reached the forecast demand for 2013, as stated in Master Plan 2030.

Earlier in March, the Hong Kong International Airport reported the airport handled 4 million passengers and 26,000 aircraft movements in the month of February 2012.

The next phase of planning is for the authority to conduct the environmental study, and is expected to take two years. The anticipated completion of the runway is 2023.
