Digital TV coverage extended to 85% of population

Hong Kong's digital TV network coverage has been expanded to cover 85 per cent of the city's population.

The boost follows the construction of five new fill-in transmitting stations at the end of 2009 by the two free-to-air broadcasters.

"This is another milestone in the implementation of digital TV broadcasting in Hong Kong.

"An additional 700,000 people will be able to enjoy a brand new audio-visual experience brought about by digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcasting," a spokesman for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said on December 20.

"The implementation of DTT broadcasting has been smooth so far as the community is keen to embrace new technological advancement.

"The format continues to be well received and accepted by the viewing public since its official launch at end of 2007."

A surevy of users has also revealed the rate of using integrated digital TV (iDTV) set to receive DTT signals was growing, although the set-top box remained the leading receiver chosen by consumers.

Please visit the Government's dedicated website at www.digitaltv.gov.hk for more information about DTT.
