'Women Who Speak' - Nancy Ma's ceramics exhibition graces Sydney

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office is this month pleased to host "Women Who Speak" exhibition by talented Hong Kong artist, Nancy Ma.

The exhibition was launched at Hong Kong House in Sydney early this month and was attended by many VIPs including Sydney's Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.

In her opening speech, the Lord Mayor described the exhibition as 'challenging' and that the works displayed serve the purpose of 'highlighting the importance of art.'

Choosing to use the Duen Sam, a women's upper garment from Qing Dynasty as her 'canvas', Nancy Ma's work speak of a women's life under the influence of Chinese culture and society.

The installations at HKETO consist of three series of work: "Her Clothes, Her Life", "My Clothes, My Life" and "Their Clothes, Their Lives". These works provide a social commentary on a women's life in Hong Kong through Nancy's eyes, annotating the progression and change in the lives of Chinese women over last century.

While Nancy's success as a multi-cultural marketer and as a prominent figurehead in the Chinese Community in Australia is well known, what is not as well known is the work she has undertaken in ceramics, which dates back to the late 1970's. Having studied ceramics part-time at TAFE colleges in Sydney over the last twenty years, Nancy is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney.

In 2007 Nancy left the marketing world in order to pursue her true passion of ceramics.

Nancy's work is a stunning example of the rich, and inspiring cultural landscape of Hong Kong.

The exhibition is open for public viewing until March 10 in Hong Kong House in Sydney.
