Hong Kong plans to bid the 2023 Asian Games

Hong Kong’s 2023 Asian Games bid will be an invaluable boost for the city's long-term policy goals for sport, according to the city’s Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing.

Mr Tsang recently met with delegates from the Commission on Youth, Hong Kong's leading youth advisory body to explain the rationale for the bid.

During talks he underlined the importance of the bid as the Government's further commitment to sports development over the long-term.

"The successful hosting of the Asian Games will not only foster sports development in Hong Kong, but also help promote a spirit of perseverance among young athletes," Mr Tsang said.

"Hosting the Games will also help strengthen Hong Kong's status as Asia's World City, stimulate economic activities, create job opportunities and advocate a healthy lifestyle, and thus bringing intangible but concrete long-term benefits."

A public consultation period about the bid will end in December, with the community being asked to submit their views in writing on via online forums.

Hong Kong’s status as an international sporting events host has been boosted in recent years with the staging of Olympic equestrian events in 2008. Guangzhou, in neighbouring Guangdong province, is the host city for the 2010 Asian Games in November.
