The Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association

The Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association (HKNZBA) is a nationwide organisation with the majority of its corporate members located in Auckland.

It also has SMEs, individual members and "country members" - a category reserved for those living outside the main centres who might find it difficult to attend the various events and seminars held by the association throughout the year.

Since the HKNZBA was founded in 1988 its membership has grown to more than 80 (many of whom have three members as part of the corporate membership, bringing the total members to around 150). The current recession has reduced numbers slightly, but there is strong interest and new recruits on the back of a successful “Hong Kong Week” held in September.

President Eva Ho says Hong Kong Week (September 16 -20) was hugely successful in bringing together people doing business between New Zealand and Hong Kong, sponsors and, through an inaugural HK Festival, members of the public.

Eva Ho heads HKNZBA’s committee of 14 people, which includes 13 executive members drawn from a cross section of the membership and Cyrus Cheng as administrator.

The association drives a variety of initiatives, including a HK Wine Seminar. This was a major catalyst for wineries going to the HK Wine Fair last year and this year cosponsor NZ Winegrowers will go with 40 NZ wineries and their agents to the fair.

A HK film seminar held during HK Week this year also attracted a good cross section from the film sector. Now HKNZBA has been asked to host HK’s Permanent Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development (Communications & Technology) Duncan Pescod during his proposed visit to Auckland in December.

The association is also working with NZ’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the provision of information to business once the current negotiations between NZ and HK for a Closer Economic Partnership (CEP) are completed.

Trade between NZ and HK is growing. More than NZ$555 million of goods were exported to Hong Kong by New Zealand companies and NZ$200 million goods were imported in the year to December 2007. HKNZBA works with the Hong Kong Government "family" – HK Trade Development Council, HK Economic and Trade Office and Invest Hong Kong – to facilitate trade information and assist its members.

Membership is open to all who have an interest in developing business relationships between NZ and HK. Contact hk@hongkong.org.nz for a membership application. For information visit www.hongkong.org.nz
