  Tai O Twin bridges: design competition now open  
     
  The Project Manager (Hong Kong Island & Islands) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Raymond Ho (second left), and other guests officiate at the launch ceremony of the Design Competition for Tai O Twin Bridges.All suitably qualified international professionals are being called upon to contribute innovative design concepts for two footbridges in Tai O – an idyllic fishing village better known as the ‘Venice of Hong Kong’.

The Project Manager, Raymond Ho said, "The two proposed footbridges will help improve the connectivity within Tai O.

 Tai O dragon boat parade The footbridge at Po Chue Tam is near the Yeung Hau Temple, a Grade I historic building, while the footbridge at Yim Tin is located in ecologically sensitive areas.

As a result of the competition we hope to receive functional, innovative, iconic and holistic designs that take into account the beautiful surroundings."

Mr Ho added, "To facilitate the holding of the dragon boat water parade, a traditional Tai O event, the middle parts of the footbridges should be able to open, which will make them different from more common designs."

The competition is divided into the Professional Group and the Open Group for the Po Chue Tam Footbridge and the Open Group for the Yim Tin Footbridge.

Participants in the Professional Group should be qualified professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, urban design or other related disciplines. Internationally registered architects are welcome to participate and the two Open Groups call on the general public to participate.

A multidisciplinary jury panel will be formed to assess the entries. Attractive prizes include HK$300,000 for the first winning entry of the Professional Group and HK$30,000 for each of the first winning entries in the two Open Groups.

Registration for the competition will close on 28 December 2012. Entries should be submitted by 31 January 2013. For details and the rules of the competition, please visit the competition website at www.taiobridges.hk.

The competition is organised by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government with support from the Government's Development Bureau, together with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design.
