2012: Hong Kong in review
     
  Hong Kong celebrated its 15th Anniversary as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.In 2012, Hong Kong celebrated its 15th Anniversary as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. In March, Mr CY Leung was elected the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR.

The new ministry was sworn in on 1 July for a five‐year term. In September, the election of the fifth SAR Legislative Council (LegCo) attracted a record 1.83 million voters to the polls.

Real GDP expanded by 1.0% over a year earlier in the first three quarters.
RMB trade settlement conducted through Hong Kong reached RMB1,930 billion in the first three quarters, an increase of 45% over the same period in 2011.
In 2012, Hong Kong was ranked as the world’s freest economy for the 18th consecutive year by the Heritage Foundation; the most competitive economy by the International Institute for Management Development; the Best Place for Business by Bloomberg; first for the second consecutive year in the Financial Development Index released by the World Economic Forum; and the world’s best city by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
In the first eight months of 2012, visitor arrivals rose to 32 million, 16% more than in the corresponding period in 2011.

There was much to celebrate in Hong Kong in 2012 - the year was designated as Hong Kong Design Year, with a wide array of signature events, promotion and celebration activities to propel the development of Hong Kong as Asia's creative capital.

In November, Hong Kong celebrated all things food and wine with a month-long event including the annual Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival.
