  Visit to New Zealand

At the end of November, I undertook my 9th visit to New Zealand since I was appointed Director of the HKETO in July 2010. I was accompanied for the week-long trip by Ms Ilona Cipe, who recently joined the HKETO as the Head of Public Relations. As always, the purpose of the visit was to meet as many people and organisations as possible, to introduce the work of the HKETO and other HK entities operating out of Sydney, to update people on news and developments in Hong Kong, and to explore opportunities for collaboration. This visit had a particular emphasis on developing a relationship with the Maori communities.

Our visit started in Christchurch. This was my third attempt to visit Christchurch - previous efforts had been thwarted by the two major earthquakes that shattered this beautiful city. Walking around the fenced-off city centre, Ilona and I were struck by the magnitude of the destruction, and the determination of Canterbury's kiwis to get back as close as possible to normal as soon as possible.

The visit also covered Timaru, Dunedin and Wellington. As a result of many useful discussions we will be pursuing the organisation of a Hong Kong road show with Maori business organisations in the first half of 2012, collaboration between New Zealand and Hong Kong's creative industries, more cooperation between our universities, as well as providing assistance to a number of individual companies that are exploring business opportunities in Hong Kong. We also recruited an outstanding kiwi student to join the HKETO in Sydney as an intern in January 2012.

My 10th visit to New Zealand follows very shortly, to put some meat on these bones before everyone breaks for Xmas and the new year holidays.
