Fifth Legislative Council Election
     
  A record 1.83 million voters turned up to vote for the Fifth Legislative Council.A record 1.83 million voters (53% of 3.4 million registered voters) had turned up to vote on 9 September to elect the fifth Legislative Council (LegCo) since Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty 15 years ago.

The new LegCo is made up of 70 members, of which 35 represent five geographical constituencies and the other 35 represent twenty-nine functional constituencies.  Geographical constituencies are directly elected seats and functional constituencies are elected mostly by professional and industry groups.  The term of LegCo members is four years.

Mr Jasper Tsang was elected President of the Fifth Legislative Council (LegCo).The LegCo held its first meeting on 10 October.  Lawmakers elected the president after taking the Legislative Council Oath.

The two members nominated for the office of President, Mr Alan Leong and Mr Jasper Tsang, received 27 and 43 votes respectively with Mr Tsang being elected President of the fifth LegCo.

With one heart and one vision, we shall strive for the well-being of the community and serve the people of Hong Kong."

The Council's House Committee also held its first meeting. Andrew Leung was elected chairman, and Ronny Tong deputy.

The Finance Committee held its first meeting immediately after the House Committee meeting. Tommy Cheung and Emily Lau were elected chairman and deputy.
