No.5  October, 2011

  Foreword

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mr Donald Tsang, delivered his final Policy Address on 12 October 2011. Mr Tsang's term of office will expire on 30 June 2012. In his address, Mr Tsang highlighted the provision of affordable housing, Hong Kong's aging population, enhancing Hong Kong's competitiveness and improving living standards for the grass roots as being key issues. Further details of the Policy Address are contained within this issue of Hong Kong Monitor.

The process of selecting Hong Kong's next Chief Executive has already started. The nomination period for the District Council elections to be held in November has closed. Those candidates who are successfully elected to the District Councils will form the Election Committee (together with Legislative Council members and Hong Kong members of the National People's Congress) to select the Chief Executive. The Chief Executive election will take place on 25 March 2012, with the winner taking office on 1 July 2012.

There will also be elections for the Legislative Council in September 2012.

Whatever the outcome of the elections my colleagues in InvestHK, HK Trade Development Council, the HK Tourism Board and I will continue to keep you informed about activities and opportunities involving Hong Kong.
