Hong Kong Government welcomes Google's plan to set up data centre

The Hong Kong Government welcomed Google's announcement of its plan to build a data centre in Hong Kong. It believes that Google could leverage Hong Kong's competitive edge to further enhance its business in the region.

The Government Chief Information Officer, Stephen Mak, said the fact that another multinational enterprise has chosen Hong Kong as the location for its data centre facilities reaffirmed the city's status as the prime location for data centres in the region.

"We will continue to promote our competitive advantages to prospective data centre developers and operators, and encourage them to set up strategic data centres here."

Mr. Mak said Hong Kong had significant advantages as a regional data centre hub, including a favourable business environment, free flow of information, sound information technology infrastructure, and reliable power supply.

According to the Data Centre Risk Index jointly published by consulting firms Cushman & Wakefield and hurleypalmerflatt in June this year, there is less risk in establishing a data centre in Hong Kong than in any other place in Asia, and it ranks fourth among the 20 economies surveyed.

The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer established a Data Centre Facilitation Unit and launched a dedicated portal in July this year to facilitate the development of more high-tier data centres in Hong Kong. The unit provides one-stop inquiry and helpdesk services for parties who are interested in setting up data centres in Hong Kong and coordinates efforts of different government departments to offer assistance in relevant issues.
