Hong Kong's sea bound path to be next cruise capital

New developments have been revealed for Kai Tak, Hong Kong's new world-class cruise terminal currently under construction.

Hong Kong, an ideal world leader in cruise tourism draws on its status as dynamic tourist destination, diverse year-round cruise itineraries, effective world-city infrastructure and sustainable berthing.

Early March this year saw Hong Kong Tourism Commission award Worldwide Cruise Terminals Consortium the tenancy for operating and managing the new cruise terminal at Kai Tak and the Consortium will pay the Government a fixed rent for the 10-year operation of approximately HK$13 million.

The new cruise terminal is expected to commence operation in mid-2013 and is set to revolutionise cruise tourism.

Donald Tsang, Hong Kong Chief Executive, said "The new Kai Tak Cruise Terminal will mark a milestone in the development of Hong Kong's cruise tourism."

Taking advantage of Hong Kong's natural deep water harbour, Kai Tak will have two berths and be well equipped with supporting facilities to accommodate the concurrent berthing of two mega cruise vessels.

The new cruise location will also boast increased efficiency of passenger clearance, clearing up to 3000 passengers an hour.

The consortium will arrange berthing of cruise vessels, and embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. It will also be responsible for the terminal's promotion, operation and management, including traffic arrangements within the transportation area, security arrangements, and commercial area tenancy.
