The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Sydney welcomed its 2012 interns last month.

This year's interns Julie Hands from New Zealand, Loren Viswalingam and Bernadette Yim, both from Sydney, each bring with them a unique skill set and an eagerness to embark on the journey ahead.

Each year HKETO offers three internships to three university students from New Zealand and Australia as part of their goal of achieving closer ties.

The interns came from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. Bernadette studies Music Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, while Loren is studying Biochemistry, Asian government and Mandarin at the University of Sydney. Julie, in turn, is completing her Law and Commerce Degrees majoring in marketing at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

Upon speaking to the interns you find a group of smart, engaging young women eager to learn and excited about the opportunities presented to them.

Julie shed some light on what the internship involved, "When we arrived on the first and we met with the Director we were told that the purpose of our time here was to be challenged. Well, they certainly lived up to their promises!"

"There's no fetching coffee or photocopying in this internship. Whether we are pounding the streets of Sydney or helping to develop new marketing strategies life is never dull"

"The Head of PR, Ilona Cipe, is really challenging us, providing us with opportunities that I never would have thought I'd be doing. She's an incredible person to learn from, and there's never a dull a moment when Ilona is around," Loren laughs.

Coming from a musical background Bernadette in particular brings with her a unique approach. When asked about how she's enjoying it Bernadette responds enthusiastically.

"I can't tell you how much I enjoy working here. I find myself inspired by the dedication, hard work and passion everyone here shows in their work."

Head of PR, Ilona Cipe, speaks highly of the interns "I'm really enjoying the effervessence and energy that our interns, this year, bring with them."

While the internships offered annually by HKETO provide opportunities for young students to gain experience, it is also a chance for established members of the team to pass on what they know.

Ilona reflected upon this, "I take some pleasure in knowing my mentoring and work with each intern will shape their future lives. I see them all as rising stars and look forward to watching their progress in the business world in years to come".

Julie hands, Loren Viswalingam and Bernadette Yim worked in the Sydney office until the end of February at which time they all return to their studies, while continuing the happy relationships forged at HKETO in Sydney.
