New Asian Art Exhibition to Launch at Hong Kong House

The new Red Dose art exhibition will be held at Hong Kong House, 80 Druitt StreetWith the support of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney-based independent arts organiser Red Dose will present its second major exhibition entitled ‘I Was Therefore I Am’. This exhibition, which focuses on Hong Kong artists, will be on view between Friday 4 April and Thursday 17 April at Hong Kong House located at 80 Druitt Street, Sydney.

Director of HKETO Steve Barclay said the exhibition reflects the office and Hong Kong Government’s efforts to nurture and promote Hong Kong arts.

“In recent years, Hong Kong’s reputation as an art hub has been on the rise, with contemporary art shows like Art Basel being held in the city, and through Hong Kong Government’s own initiatives like the West Kowloon Cultural District project,” said Mr Barclay.

“This exhibition is a small but important element of our efforts to nurture and promote Hong Kong culture to Australians and HKETO is honoured to be associated with it.”

'I Was Therefore I Am' explores the relationship and transition between the past and the present and how individuals are culturally shaped by places and memories.

"Cultural diversity is a valuable and important aspect of today's society. Red Dose and HKETO believe that exploring the uniqueness of any individual's culture and identity plays an important role in one’s self-expression,” explains Red Dose Artistic Director Kathy Leung.

Seven of the 12 contemporary artists in the show are established Hong Kong artists renowned across Australia and Asia. The show will feature a range of artworks, such as painting, photography, sculpture, video and installation arts.

As part of the exhibition program, audiences can enjoy a free screening of the award-winning short film ‘Ochre and Ink’ (http://www.ochreandinkmovie.com) and an artist talk by Zhou Xiao Ping following the screening on the Friday 11 April from 6-8pm.
