Three student interns spend their summer with HKETO

HKETO interns from Left to Right - Danika Maxwell, Mathew Rex and Leigh FergusonTwo Australian and a New Zealand student recently completed a two month internship at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Sydney over the 2014 summer.

This year’s interns were Leigh Ferguson and Danika Maxwell from the University of Queensland and Mathew Rex from the Victoria University of Wellington.

Leigh, who is finishing up her Bachelor of Journalism and recently completed an exchange in Hong Kong, said she enjoyed reconnecting with Hong Kong culture during her time at HKETO.

“Alongside learning the ins and outs of public relations in a government environment, it’s been a great learning experience. I love the friendly social atmosphere at HKETO and how we go out for yum cha together.”

Bachelor of Economics student Danika worked with the Project & Research team where she helped out in research work as well as preparing briefs and policy summaries. She said the experience not only improved her international awareness, but also gave her a clearer indication that she should pursue a policy-based career.

21-year-old Mathew, who is in his honours year in a Bachelor of Commerce, was excited for the internship not only to learn new skills, but also because it was his first time visiting Australia.

According to the students, the highlights of the eight-week internship were competing in the HKETO dragon boat team during Sydney’s Chinese New Year celebrations, and working on a youth strategy aimed at promoting Hong Kong to working young professionals, university students and high school students in Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s been a great feeling knowing we’re contributing to a bigger project to share and provide great opportunities abroad for young Aussies and Kiwis”, said Leigh.

Mathew recommends other students to apply for future HKETO internships.

“The people here are lovely and the office and location are fantastic. The work at HKETO is interesting and challenging and best of all, you get to live in Sydney for two months. What's not to like?”
